About Me

12 Sep 2008

Following 2 years of community conservation in Uganda, I came to the Virungas in 2006 to work with World Wildlife Fund and organize the participatory demarcation of Virunga. You can see from the maps on this site that the park is not a straight forward shape, and there have been many land grabs over the years. So it was my job to make sure the reality on the ground reflected the legal statutes from 1925 onwards.

I was then asked to develop the Monitoring & Evaluation system of WWF’s Virunga program, which I did for nearly a year. This new EcoMakala project that I am now heading up, funded by the European Commission, targets mostly small-scale farmers. It aims to create an alternative to deforestation in the park, fight poverty & contribute to local development. We also want to use the framework of the Kyoto Protocol to fight climate change, using high-quality environmental & social standards.
